The culinary world is abuzz with the opening of Demi, a new Japanese comfort food restaurant in Palo Alto. This venture is the brainchild of Demi Ebara, a former Kyoto resident who has made a name for herself in the food industry. With a background in food science and a passion for Japanese cuisine, Ebara is now challenging herself with a unique dining concept.
Ebara's journey began in the U.S. around 15 years ago, driven by the desire to provide educational opportunities for her children. However, her own educational pursuits soon took center stage, leading her to Foothill College and eventually San Jose State University, where she graduated with a degree in food science in 2015. It was during her studies that a professor's compliment on her culinary skills ignited a new ambition: starting her own restaurant.
This ambition materialized with the launch of Demiya, a fast-casual chain specializing in Japanese curry and Japanese-Western fusion. The success of Demiya, with five locations across the Bay Area, has paved the way for Demi, a more refined and sit-down dining experience. Demi offers a menu that seamlessly blends Japanese and Western flavors with a Californian twist.
Breakfast options include avocado toast with white miso avocado and chicken and waffles with Japanese karaage and dashi maple syrup. For lunch and dinner, patrons can indulge in Japanese curry empanadas, Yakiniku steak, Japanese carbonara, salmon with spinach miso cream, and the classic omurice. Dessert lovers can choose from miso caramel, monaka matcha ice cream, or yuzu sorbet.
The restaurant also boasts a small Japanese garden in its backyard, providing a serene outdoor dining experience. Ebara is awaiting approval to serve Japanese craft beer and sake, adding another layer of authenticity to the dining experience. Demi is open from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, at 407 Lytton Ave., Palo Alto.
What makes Demi particularly fascinating is Ebara's commitment to challenging herself and her desire to offer a unique dining experience. Her background in food science and her educational journey have undoubtedly contributed to the creation of a menu that is both innovative and delicious. From my perspective, Demi is a testament to Ebara's determination and her ability to blend different culinary traditions seamlessly.
In my opinion, Demi is a must-visit for anyone in the Palo Alto area who appreciates a fusion of Japanese and Western flavors. The restaurant's ambiance, menu, and attention to detail make it a standout in the local dining scene. As Ebara continues to challenge herself, I am eager to see what new culinary delights she will bring to the table.
